How prepared are you for the unexpected? I definitely wasn’t. And that is how I did the one thing you so shouldn’t do with your money: have a dysfunctional relationship with it.
You must be thinking “what in heavens are you talking about?!”
Well …
Lately incident after incident occurring has me feeling caught by surprise and the burn in my pocket seemingly doesn’t seem to cease. 😪
The latest being having my electricity trip at 7:30 am just as I was preparing for work. Talk about timely.
Gotta admit I cussed a lil and grumbled on what a start to the day. Headed for a morning meeting before rushing back home to get an electrician to identify the problem.
Which came with a $300 solution (SAY WHUT!) due to a dangerous circuit breaker which has already caused the trip and if left unattended will result in a fire.
(Just gotta add this in: truth be told I’m still uncertain if I got ripped off but well, the electrician did an effective job with stating a fire can and likely will start)
My instant thought when he quoted me the price?
DAMN. Feeling poor. 🤦🏼♀️
Imagine feeling like the expenses are mounting with tons of bills to pay and it seems like your pay is merely coming in to be transferred out.
I got to admit, I thought I’m way past that but … the year has been a painfully uncomfortable one where I’ve increased my expenses and been complacent. The result? Stuck between a wall and a hard place.
Like I said, my relationship with money got a tad bit dysfunctional.
I could give myself a ton of excuses but I’m way past that … 2019 has been a year highlighting the importance of the lesson “it is not about how much you make but how much you keep“.
Thankfully I have a month and 9 days to remedy that and end the year choosing differently. And I’m thankful to be in a career where I can choose my paycheck with what I do.
They say it only takes a moment to choose and during today’s morning meeting I was reminded that we have within us the power to choose.
I choose to be responsible, to follow through and focus.
And that includes taking a FULL and transparent financial stock take and rectifying part choices made. – cue heaving massive sigh here –
Meeting also reminded me of the fable the tortoise and the hare. And it got me thinking how in my career I’ve been like the hare – reliant on talent, on what I believe I already have.
Took me years before I opened up to take on a learning attitude (story for another day) and the thought that hit me harder than a sledgehammer today?
“Am I waiting for another catastrophe to occur? Hasn’t things taken enough of a nosedive.”
Granted when I did a personal review sometime in October, it got my engine moving and to say I’m disgusted with my current state will be quite the understatement.
Hence making the decision to share my journey to build a healthy relationship with money.
And (to finally) share the conversations and exchanges I have the privilege to have in my career to guide and educate others too.
Watch this space.
